Firefighters continue to dampen down pockets of fire following the large high-rise
fire at Grenfell Tower, located near Grenfell Rd and Bomore Rd. Officials report that
crews will remain at the scene through the night and Thursday. Twelve fatalities have
been confirmed, but government officials have indicated that the figure is expected to
rise. At least 78 people have been treated at local hospitals, 18 of whom are in critical
condition.
Firefighters are carrying out systemic searches of the building as an unspecified number
of people remain unaccounted for. A cordon remains in place around the high-rise building,
and approximately 30 adjacent flats to the tower block are evacuated. Grenfell Tower is
a 27-story apartment building, and the fire burned from the second floor to the top of the
building. The A40 is closed in both directions in the area, as is the Hammersmith &
City line of the London Underground. Other localized road closures are also in place,
and a cordon has been established around the scene. Use caution and avoid the area.
